Whitbread Signs on with Newmarket International to Automate Seven Major UK Properties via NetDelphi Enterprise Solution
Newmarket's NetDelphi Enterprise, formerly Delphi MPE, was key factor in enabling Whitbread's properties to maximize business over the Internet
22 April 2001

LONDON, ENGLAND -- Newmarket International, Ltd. announced today that UK-based Whitbread Plc is automating seven of their key properties and their central event booking services desk with NetDelphi Enterprise, formally known as Delphi Multi-Property Edition (Delphi MPE), Newmarket's thin-client enterprise application for clusters of hotels.

Whitbread Plc has chosen to install NetDelphi Enterprise in locations around the UK, including the newly built London Marriott Heathrow, the Slough/Windsor Marriott, the Brewery in London, the Marriott Forest of Arden, the Marriott Bristol Royal, the Northampton Marriott and the Newcastle Marriott Hotel Gosforth Park. Whitbread is also empowering their central conference and events desk (Event Booking Services) with NetDelphi Enterprise, enabling their sales, conference, and events management team to direct-book across the Enterprise inventory in the United Kingdom.

Over half of Whitbread's Marriott properties are automated with a legacy DOS-based application in their sales, conference and events offices. When Whitbread purchased the Swallow group of hotels in the UK last year, the executive team used this acquisition to step back and analyze their technological direction. Their main goal was to centralize sales, conferences and events on a single Microsoft-based platform. Whitbread undertook the task to review the alternatives in the marketplace.

Steve Lambert, the Director of IT for Whitbread, led a team of operations and IT managers through a series of workshops to fully understand the business needs and IT requirements for the company. "Whitbread's goal was to find a solution that would leapfrog our company into Internet-based solutions, while maintaining cohesion with our PMS and Marsha CRS products," said Lambert. "In conducting a worldwide search of competitive systems, we narrowed the list rather quickly based on three simple points: 1) the system had to have a proven track record in Windows and Internet deployment, 2) the system had to integrate with and enhance our current IT technology, and 3) the company behind the system had to provide the resources and support to ensure success," continued Lambert. "In the end, Newmarket's NetDelphi Enterprise product and industry leading services won the business.

" The initial project covers seven properties for Whitbread, as well as their Event Booking Services central desk. Once this project is completed this summer, Whitbread has the option of installing Enterprise across their entire estate. In addition to NetDelphi Enterprise, Whitbread will be installing Newmarket NetData Analysis, NetXchange Meetingbroker, as well as the integration to the Fidelio PMS. Lambert continued, saying "Based on Newmarket's track record, Whitbread is partnering with a company that will move us far ahead of the competition in the UK. Newmarket's NetMarketplace business solutions, including their Virtual Classroom, Computer Based Training (CBT) and world class customer support will enable our sales team to respond to customer enquiries within minutes."

Installation and training is scheduled to begin immediately. Over 50 users within Whitbread will benefit with the NetDelphi Enterprise network upon completion. NetDelphi Enterprise will enable all sales, conference, and events people in the Whitbread enterprise with single-image inventory and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools to manage every aspect of their sales effort: from group and transient business to the meetings and conventions business. Every point of contact will become a point of sale with full Internet access to Enterprise for remote, mobile, and distributed users, empowering the Whitbread team to sell into any property in the group with real-time information pulled from a single database.

Dan Hiza, Newmarket's Managing Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said, "Partnering with Whitbread is a milestone for Newmarket. Being Marriott's largest management company outside of the US, we understand the importance of a successful deployment of our NetMarketplace business solutions in the Whitbread estate," Hiza continued. "By leveraging Newmarket's NetDelphi, NetData and NetXchange applications, Whitbread will be in a leading position to own the UK's group, conference and events business."

About Whitbread

The Whitbread Hotel Company is the UK's second largest hotel group operating over 310 hotels and over 23,500 rooms. The company's activities are focused primarily on a strong branded presence in two market sectors - four star Marriott Hotels and budget Travel Inns.

In January 2000 Whitbread completed the acquisition of Swallow PLC adding a further 26 upscale hotels, some 5000 rooms to its Marriott hotel business. These properties will be rebranded during 2000/1 to the Marriott, Courtyard By Marriott and Renaissance brands.

The Whitbread Hotel Company operates 45 Marriott hotels in the UK, including 11 Hotel and Country Club sites offering golf and leisure facilities and ten three star hotels, branded Courtyard by Marriott. A further two Marriott hotels are operated by Marriott International (London Marriott Grosvenor Square and Cheshunt Marriott).

The Whitbread Hotel Company owns a further 28 hotels under the Swallow brand, 16 of which will be converted to Marriott Hotels by summer 2001. Marriott outperforms its competitors in terms of room occupancy and average achieved room rates. At the year end to February 2000, room yield was 13% ahead of the market average. A recent survey conducted by BDRC/NOP showed that people were more likely to recommend a Marriott hotel to a colleague than any other branded hotel. The London Marriott Hotel, County Hall has also been awarded the London Tourism Award for the Hotel of the Year.
