The first annual HA+D Award was presented to KABA by Hospitality Architecture + Design Magazine, sister publication of Hotel Management Asia, in its 2010 Readers’ Choice Award for Product Innovation in Door Handles and Locks that encompasses security.

Readers gave top marks to KABA’s flush-mounted electronic door locking system for its compelling, attractive design and seamless functionality. The lock allows hotel guests to simply pass their hotel card keys within six inches of the door’s digital reader to gain access to their rooms.

KABA representatives were invited to a gala award ceremony on the evening of March 31, 2011, at The Box, a luxurious Hong Kong private venue where the floor-to-ceiling walls present stunning views of Victoria Harbor. “The HA+D awards celebrate best practices in design, build, and fit-out, as well as products and materials," explained Tony Smyth, executive editor and publisher of Hospitality Architecture + Design Magazine. “Our judging criteria for successful products are that they demonstrate `best’ rather than `good’ or `average’ design and are innovative in some or all of the stated criteria."

A panel of international judges included representatives from Environmental Councils, National Architecture Institutes, Interior Designers’ Associations, as well as other professionals in the hospitality, design, and architecture fields. The panel evaluated a list of finalists and then opened the competition to readers, allowing them to vote on the best in each category. Winners were voted by HA+D readers via an invite to e-newsletter subscribers and other contacts in the HA+D database.
