TeliaSonera and VingCard (ASSA ABLOY Group) demonstrate hotel room access using an NFC mobile phone and lock.
13 November 2008

Today, TeliaSonera and VingCard (ASSA ABLOY Group) demonstrated using an NFC mobile phone and an NFC lock to access hotel rooms in Stockholm. Near Field Communication (NFC) technology allows customers to access services by simply touching their phone to NFC-enabled locks, readers, turnstiles, posters and point of sales terminals.

“VingCard has installed over 100,000 Signature RFID/NFC locks around the world. Major hotel groups across Scandinavia are installing these locks. The demand for Signature RFID/NFC locks is rising because they offer significant advantages to both hoteliers and guests.” says Pascal Metivier, EMEA President of ASSA ABLOY Hospitality.

With Signature RFID/NFC, the latest product from VingCard for contact-less electronic locks, hotel guests can use their mobile phone to open the hotel room door. The booking confirmation, room number and an encrypted room key is sent to the guest’s mobile phone before they arrive at the hotel, avoiding the need to check-in at the front desk. On arrival, the guest can proceed directly to the room, where they open the door simply by using their NFC-enabled mobile phone as the hotel room key. The mobile phone can also display loyalty information related to the stay.

“NFC has the potential to offer a new level of simplicity for users. We and VingCard have today jointly demonstrated the possibilities of one important example. We want to build the ecosystems with strong players, like VingCard, for different NFC applications. TeliaSonera offers Telia Kvittens services for the Swedish market, which have received very good customer and user feedback. We will continue to work together with partners to offer more NFC-based services which add value to customers“, says Lars Klasson, CTO and SVP Mobility Services at TeliaSonera.

SWP (Single Wire Protocol) UICC (Universal Integrated Circuit Card) based handsets are expected to emerge on the market next year. TeliaSonera and VingCard are exploring opportunities for further co-operation in the field of NFC access management.

About Near Field Communication, NFC: NFC is based on a combination of electronic transmission standards known from the chip card industry. The technology allows electronic transmission of data across distances of up to 10 cm. The NFC standard incorporates important security features required for the transmission of sensitive data for identification, ticketing and payment. Data are transmitted at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. NFC is standardized in the following norms: ISO 18092, ISO 21481, ECMA (340, 352 and 356) and ETSI TS 102 190. The technology is compatible with the international chip card standard ISO 14443 A/B. SWP (Single Wire Protocol) is an approved ETSI standard for how to connect the UICC (SIM card) with the NFC chip in the mobile phone. TeliaSonera has for some time been a forerunner in the innovative forums that have explored new opportunities based on the NFC technology. NFC is an important technology for the Telia Kvittens services offered in Sweden. Telia Kvittens comprises mobile and web-based services which simplify field work planning and follow-up.
