COLUMBIA, Md., MICROS Systems, Inc.
[NASDAQ: MCRS]
, a leading provider of information technology solutions for the hospitality industry, and Raytheon Polar Services, a division of Raytheon Corporation under contract to support the U.S. Antarctic Program, are implementing the MICROS 3700 in three locations in Antarctica, making MICROS a totally global company. MICROS of Colorado initiated and implemented the agreement to install MICROS 3700, Product Management & Credit Card Authorization/Settlement, and 15 Eclipse workstations (nine placed in use immediately) at the continent's three stations: McMurdo, the largest; Palmer, a northern outpost attracting the most tourists; and Amundsen-Scott South Pole, at the bottom of the world.
To replace its custom legacy system, Raytheon required a configurable, off-the-shelf system that provided reliability, ease of use, flexibility, and inventory tracking and reporting capabilities, all of which MICROS could offer. High reliability was critical for a system operating in a physical environment with summer temperatures outside below -50 degrees F, high levels of volcanic dust, static electricity from the constant dry cold, and limited access to service. Because staff turns over at least two times a year, the ability to train quickly and easily was important. The system had to have the flexibility for handling transactional environments that included cafeterias, bars, snack bars, retail stores and video rental. And, on a continent where replenishing supplies is no simple task, inventory tracking and reporting were essential. "We were very impressed with the MICROS product and installation team. All critical installation deadlines, which included the South Pole Station, were met. We are confident that MICROS can take us well into the future and have only tapped into a small portion of the capabilities that the overall system can provide," said Lisa Wright, Manager, NANA Services, LLC, contracted to Raytheon Polar Services. "Raytheon required a system that staff could use easily, the IT area could control, and the company's corporate users in Denver could access through the network," noted Wade Holt, VP of Technical Services at MICROS of Colorado. "Considering that McMurdo alone does $10,000 a day in the sale of products that are sold almost at cost, more activity is taking place than one expects." "With an installation in Antarctica, we've become one of a handful of truly global companies, and the only POS vendor to be installed on all 7 continents," Dan Interlandi, Executive Vice President of North America Distribution for MICROS, observed. "MICROS is thrilled to be the POS of choice for Raytheon's Polar Services and, indirectly, the U.S. Antarctic Program."
