MICROS Unveils OPERA Palm Prototype at HITEC Expo - Hospitality Industry Technology Expo and Conference Oracle8i(tm) Lite Enabled Wireless Unit to Increase Guest Service at World's Leading Hotel Properties
22 June 1999

MICROS Systems, Inc. [NASDAQ: MCRS] , the global leading provider of hotel information technology, will introduce the first prototype of its OPERAPalm application at the Hospitality Industry Technology Expo and Conference (HITEC) in Atlanta this week.

The OPERAPalm will enable hotels around the world to be more responsive to guest needs by using a mobile handheld device with real-time data access for high frequency guest service functions and hotel staff communications.

Plans call for the OPERAPalm to be available as part of MICROS-Fidelio OPERA, a suite of tightly integrated and scalable hotel enterprise applications, in early 2000.

The HITEC prototype will demonstrate OPERA's Quality Management System functions including facility maintenance reporting, housekeeping updates, and customer request reports as the first in a range of mobile, wired or wireless add on applications to OPERA.

One of the key benefits of the wireless OPERAPalm is that communication on key guest service tasks is real-time no matter where the hotel staffer is on property, so it does not require the user to download data from a docking station.

The Wireless OPERAPalm prototype will use the latest Symbol Technologies handheld SPT 1740, a rugged, pocketable computer based on the popular 3Com(r) Palm OS architecture and connected-organizer functionality.

The prototype incorporates Symbol's Spectrum24(r) wireless local area network (WLAN) for voice and data communications. The wired OPERAPalm version will run on a number of Palm PCs including the Palm III(tm), Palm V(tm) or any device that utilizes a Palm Computing(r) platform.

OPERAPalm Adds New Dimension to Hotel Information Technology

Jeff Edwards, MICROS Executive Vice President, said, "The introduction of Palm PC technology brings a whole new dimension to automating the day-to-day procedures and information requirements in hotels."

"Because the OPERAPalm will be used to check-in a guest, take a restaurant order or deal with a guest complaint, it will allow for greater productivity and efficiency," he said.

For this prototype, MICROS is using Oracle8i(tm) Lite, a small footprint database optimized for mobile computing and used by the Palm PC. Oracle8i Lite will allow the OPERAPalm to synchronize data directly from the OPERA server to the Palm PC from anywhere in and outside the hotel. OPERA utilizes the Oracle(r) database and development tools for all of its applications.

"By marrying our mobile technology with its enterprise applications, MICROS has enabled a new generation of functionality to the hospitality industry," said Denise Lahey, Vice President, Mobile and Embedded Products division at Oracle.

"With Oracle8i Lite, mobile applications can be seamlessly integrated into the existing IT infrastructure, allowing enormous benefits to service industries at a low cost of ownership."

As a multi-system solution, OPERA is able to support several operating systems and hardware platforms in a single network, including Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT, a variety of UNIX environments, and PC and thin client platforms (network, NetPC, PC with Java).
